Library Policies

 

Policy Title: Rules & Regulations for Conduct in Libraries

Effective Date: 4/19/94

Applies to: Libraries Affiliated with the Middle Georgia Regional Library

Exceptions: With the Director’s Prior Approval

 

The Macon/Bibb County Public Libraries Board of Trustees and the Middle Georgia Regional Library Board of Trustees have adopted the following policy so that the Library may provide an atmosphere conducive to appropriate use of the services and the facilities. Use of the library is for reading, studying, writing and listening to recorded or electronically transmitted materials. The public is required to comply with these Rules and Regulations.

 

Behavior Prohibited

- Engaging in disorderly conduct, fighting or challenging to fight, or using offensive words to provoke violence

- Using obscene or abusive acts and/or language

- Loud or disruptive behavior

- Rudeness to employees, other patrons or security personnel

- Indecent exposure

- Misuse of restrooms

 

Actions Prohibited

- Distributing or posting printed materials/literature that have not been approved by the Library

- Selling or soliciting for money or items or services

- Changing of clothes or bathing in the restrooms

- Taking Library materials into restrooms

- Removing Library materials from the premises without authorization through established lending procedures

- Abusing books, materials or equipment

- Eating or drinking (bringing food or beverages into the library)

- Smoking or other uses of tobacco

- Possessing or consuming alcohol or illegal drugs or being under the influence of alcohol or drugs

- Not wearing shoes or shirt

- Bringing bedrolls, frame backpacks or suitcases (large duffel bags or plastic bags measuring over two and one-half feet in length or height will not be allowed); a maximum of two bags of any type will be allowed

- Carrying weapons of any kind

- Littering

- Loitering in the lobby, stacks, restrooms or parking lot

- Using the pay phone for extended periods (more than 10 minutes not allowed)

- Wandering from floor to floor

- Putting feet or legs on the furniture

- Moving Library furnishings

- Sleeping or putting your head on a table

- Playing cards or games of any kind

- Bringing animals or pets into the Library (except guide dogs for the blind or hearing-impaired)

- Leaving a child under twelve years of age unattended by an adult. For the safety and well being of young children, those children 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult when using the Library

- Leaving any child or young adult (up to age 17) in the Library after closing time

- For traffic safety reasons, children may not wait in front of the Library or parking lot for their rides; parents are requested to park their cars and come into the Library to pick up their children

- Any illegal acts or conduct in violation of Federal, State or local law, ordinance or regulation

- Wearing headphones with the volume turned up loud enough for others to hear

 

Enforcement

Violation of any of these rules can result in temporary expulsion, permanent expulsion or arrest.

Offenders will be given a verbal warning. After the first warning, the offender will be asked to leave the Library and will be readmitted only after the parent/guardian has met with the Librarian or Director.
