Dealers Welcome

The 2010 Old Book Sale will be held Thursday through Sunday, February 18-21 at Central City Park in Macon, GA.  It is an annual event that is held the weekend after President’s Day.  The Old Book Sale is an extremely popular event and people come from all over to get great deals on books for their reading or collecting enjoyment.  This year the Sale has been extended to include Sunday to make it easier for families to attend.

If you are interested or know a group or organization that would like to volunteer, please Email us at friends@bibblib.org.

PREVIEW PARTY

The Preview Party will be held on Wednesday, February 17 from 5pm-8pm.  The Party is for members only but those wishing to become new members may join at the door.  Snacks and refreshments will be served and there will be a Silent Auction of some interesting items.

The level of membership will determine the number of book a member may purchase at the Preview Party.  A Student ($10) or Individual ($25) Member is entitled to purchase as many as 12 books.  A Patron/Couple ($50) may purchase 24 books and a Benefactor ($100) may purchase 48 books.  Members are welcome to bring their own totes or boxes if desired.

                       DONATE YOUR “GENTLY USED BOOKS”

Why not clean out your bookshelves to make room for the books you buy at the Old Book Sale?  It’s a recycling program that is fun!

If you are wondering what makes a book “gently used”, it is a book that is in good enough condition for someone else to read.  Most of our shoppers avoid books that are water damaged, moldy or falling apart.  The only exception is a book that is very old but even those items should  have all the pages intact.  We request that you avoid donating magazines as they are not sold at the Book Sale.

To donate books for the Old Book Sale, bring them to the desk of the Washington Memorial Library or any of the Bibb County library branches.  Be sure to mark your bags or boxes  “Friends” or “Book Sale” so we will be sure to get them.  If you have a lot of books to donate, you can bring them to the service entrance on the College St. side of the Washington Memorial Library, where maintenance staff can unload your vehicle.  The Friends are available to help unload books on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Washington Memorial Library at the corner of Washington and College Streets.

Who are the Friends?

The Friends of the Library are volunteers who demonstrate their belief in the importance of excellent public libraries by:

  • becoming members of the Friends of the Macon-Bibb County Library.
  • donating their old books, money and time for the benefit of the Macon-Bibb County public libraries.
  • sorting, boxing and pricing books donated for the Old Book Sale.
  • organizing, staffing and conducting the annual Old Book Sale.
  • administering the Memorial Book and Memorial Trust Programs.
  • working on developing programs to promote reading.

Since 1966, when the Friends of the Library began in Macon with twelve members, our organization has donated well over a million dollars to the Macon-Bibb County Libraries.  Over the past thirty years, the Friends have provided many of the books, services and numerous pieces of equipment our community now enjoys.

Jane Hollister and Kathleen Maxfield count the boxes before the books are moved to the Sale.
