The "Miss Martha" Bookmobile is named for Martha Sparks, who worked for the public libraries of Macon from 1915 to 1970. She started her career at the old Macon Public Library on Mulberry Street and moved to Washington Memorial Library in 1955 after an interval away from the library. Miss Sparks was from a prominent Macon family and attended Agnes Scott College. Her portrait, shown below, is on display in the Talking Book Center at Washington Memorial Library.
The first "Miss Martha" Bookmobile was named for Martha Sparks at a ceremony in 1972.
The Bookmobile serves as a link between the regional members of the Middle Georgia Regional Library System and the main library. Librarians deliver books to the affiliate libraries and provide them with reference assistance.
